Uruguay
This country welcomes travelers with the natural way of its people. Tourists come looking for the beauty of its landscape and the warmth of its inhabitants, a distinctive character of the Uruguayans .
To the traditional tourist places such as Punta del Este and Colonia, you can add other destinations of spectacular development like the oceanic coast of Rocha, which during the last year increased the number of its visitors over 100%. There are wonderful beaches for every taste: from almost virginal to those where musical shows take place, and from the ones with wild waves to those family oriented.
Uruguay is located in the southeastern part of South America. It is home to some 3.5 million people, of whom 1.4 million live in the capital Montevideo and its metropolitan area. An estimated 88% of the population is of European descent.
Uruguay's only land border is with Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, to the north. To the west lies the Uruguay River, to the southwest lies the estuary of Rio de la Plata, with Argentina only a short commute across the banks of either body of water, while to the southeast lies the southern part of the Atlantic Ocean. Uruguay, with an area of approximately 176.000 square kilometers, is the second smallest nation of South America after Surinam.
In relation to its character, land area and population, Uruguay is both a popular international tourist destination and home to a vigorous, domestic tourist trade.
Nearly 1.8 million tourists arrived in 2007, and their estimated expenditures in 2007 were around US$800 million - an increase of almost a third above 2006 levels. Domestic expenditure remains, however, remains around 60% of the nation's tourist activity.
Uruguay's Atlantic coast remains a relatively untapped and unspoiled tourist resource. Its most remote beaches can generally be found in the country's Rocha Department, with includes Uruguay's eastern-most Atlantic approaches. Notable tourist destinations in the area include the ocean front communities of Cabo Polonio, La Paloma and Punta del Diablo - all of which have attracted growing interest and investment since around 1990.
